Alaska Mission Trip
June 9-18, 2008
NEW OR UPDATED INFORMATION HAS AN "***" BESIDE IT.
THE UNDERLINED PORTION IS THE MODIFIED INFORMATION.
What will we be doing?
You will work with church planter Velton Johnston and the Hatcher Pass Baptist Association to plant a church. This will include prayer walking, block parties, neighborhood BBQ, backyard bible schools, games/sports in parks, community surveying, evening study classes, and servanthood acts of kindness.
Are we going to fly to Alaska?
Yes. The flights have already been booked. The church will provide transportation to/from Memphis via our church bus.
How much should I pack?
Try to limit your luggage to one check-in and one carry-on. This will simplify our travel. Check-in luggage has to be 50 lbs or less. If your luggage is over this amount, you will be expected to pay the overage fee ($50 each way).
***Where are we going to serve?
We will be serving in a town called Wasilla, a community in the beautiful Matanuska Valley. The town has about 9,000 people. We will work from approximately 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. On Sunday we will worship with the sponsoring church, FBC Willow, or we may host an outdoor worship service in Wasilla.
***Where will we sleep?
We will be staying in Willow, a 40 minute drive from Wasilla. "Ms. Ruby" has opened her home to us. She has plenty of beds, sheets, towels, and blankets (even a washer and dryer). Bears on the back porch come at no additional charge.
***What should I plan to wear to church on Sunday?
Men can wear open collar shirts and women can wear pants and a nice shirt. I prefer nobody wear jeans to church on Sunday.
***What should I wear during the week?
Feel free to wear jeans or other casual-style clothes. Shorts will not be appropriate due to temperature in the low 60s during the day and the high 30s at night.
What does the $1,500 trip cost cover?
It covers your transportation between Greenville and Memphis, your flights to/from Alaska, van transportation while in Alaska, room and board while in Wasilla, your cabin at Denali, a dinner theater, and your shuttle bus ticket inside Denali National Park.
How much money should I bring on the trip?
You will need money to buy your meals while traveling to/from Alaska. You will also need money to buy your meals while we are at Denali (2 Breakfasts, 3 Lunches, 1 Dinner). Finally, you will need money for any souvenirs.
Will we have any time to sightsee?
YES!!! There is a chance that we will have all day Tuesday to recover from our flight and/or use this day for local sightseeing. Then, on Sunday afternoon we will travel to Denali National Park (3½ hr drive) for some rest and relaxation. While at Denali, we will enjoy a dinner theater, a scenic tour of the park, etc.
Where are we staying when we go to Denali National Park?
We will stay at McKinley Creekside Cabins. Each couple will have a private cabin and individuals will bunk in pairs.

Tell me about the dinner theater.
Here’s what they say about their show: “Discover the legend of the first expedition to the summit of Mt. McKinley in a rollicking musical comedy that will have you clapping and singing along with the cast right up to the finale. Join our lively cast of characters for this high energy revue performed nightly in our dinner theater. Enjoy a hearty, family-style meal featuring smokehouse ribs, Alaska salmon and mouth-watering accompaniments served prior to show time. This feel-good show takes you to new heights of entertainment - all the way to the summit of the Great One!”

What time is our Dinner Theater?
We are booked for the 8:30 p.m. meal/show on Sunday night, June 15th.
Tell me about the scenic tour of Denali National Park.
Here’s what they say about their shuttle: “Shuttle buses travel to various destinations along the Denali Park Road. The shuttle bus system is designed to provide access to visitors wishing to see remote areas of the park, access a campground, or go for a hike. If you choose to disembark from your original bus, reboarding other shuttle buses is possible on a space available basis. Trips on the shuttle bus are informal. The drivers will assist you in spotting wildlife along the road and are able to answer visitor questions about the park and its resources. Rest stops along the road are spaced at approximately one-hour intervals. It is important to remember to bring beverages and food, as none will be available once your trip begins.”

What time is our shuttle reservation for our trip into the park?
We are all booked on the 6:15 a.m. shuttle on Monday, June 16th.
Can I get off of the bus at any time?
Beginning at mile 20, a visitor can exit a bus for some day hiking or exploring, then return to the road when ready and re-board the next shuttle (green) bus that has seating space available. Stand by the side of the road in which you wish to travel, and wave your arms to flag down an oncoming green bus. During peak hours/peak season this can be a wait of up to an hour. Passengers disembarking MUST be prepared for rapidly changing weather throughout the summer including heavy thunderstorms or snow. Wait times for reboarding a bus may be longer during times of adverse weather conditions due to increased demand.
Are there restroom facilities in the park?
Yes - All buses stop approximately every hour and a half for a restroom break.
What should I bring with me on the shuttle?
Suggested items to bring include: food, drinks, warm clothes, rainwear, walking shoes or boots, insect repellant, camera, binoculars and personal medications as necessary.
Are there any special items I should pack for our trip on the shuttle?
YES. You should pack a soft-cooler large enough for your lunch, water, and snacks during our 11 hour bus ride into Denali. There are no food or drinks available for purchase inside the park.
